A week passed, slowly and empty. Something was missing in the air. Though Eva hadn't been able to work hard enough to be truly missed on the farm, her brothers felt more drained at the end of the day. The herb patch was empty, desolate. And Eva sat in her room near perpetually, staring at a wall, her tattered bag clutched in her lap.
Eventually, after torturous hour after hour, day after day, he came back with a few other officials. Three, to be exact. Eva's mind always required exactness, even when it annoyed even herself. It was one of her quirks.
"Evaline. I see you are readily packed." It was a little before midday. Her family was still working in the fields.
"You will come with us. We will take you where you need to be." It was not a request. Eva hopped off of her chair and walked after them, mind too sluggish in shock to even come up with some clever quip.
Later that day, Amos came in for lunch. Eva wasn't there.
She had vanished from his life without a word.
